Guizhou

one of the largest waterfalls in Asia, Miao villages and karst rivers

Southwest China Best time: April - October 9 places to see

Guizhou is the province China forgot to promote, and the one travelers are happiest to discover. Huangguoshu Falls drops 74 meters over a 81-meter lip, and a walkway takes you behind the curtain of water through a cave in the rock. Nearby the Longgong cave system is explored by boat, through nine chambers with an underground waterfall.
The province is also the heartland of the Miao and Dong peoples. Xijiang Qianhu, the largest Miao village in China, terraces a hillside with a thousand timber houses; the Dong villages around Zhaoxing are built around drum towers and wind-and-rain bridges.
It is a region for travelers who have seen the classics and want somewhere that still feels like a discovery. Roads are good, hotels are comfortable, and the crowds are a fraction of Guilin's.
