China Visa-Free Entry: What Applies to Your Passport
China has widened visa-free entry considerably for short stays, and a separate transit scheme covers many more nationalities. Here is how to work out which one applies to you.
China now admits a large number of nationalities without a visa for short stays, and a broader group can transit visa-free on the way to a third country. The two schemes are different and it is easy to confuse them.
Scheme one: unilateral visa-free entry
Citizens of a growing list of countries may enter China visa-free for tourism, business, family visits and transit, staying up to a fixed number of days per entry. The list is published and updated by China's National Immigration Administration, and it has changed several times in the past two years — countries have been added, and the policy has been extended past its original end date.
What matters for you: check that your nationality is currently on the list, note the maximum stay, and make sure your passport has the validity your airline will require.
Scheme two: visa-free transit
If you are traveling from Country A to Country B and simply passing through China, you may be able to enter visa-free at a designated port for a longer stopover than most travelers expect. You need a confirmed onward ticket, you must enter and exit through eligible ports, and your stopover must stay inside the permitted region.
This is how a great many travelers now add three or four days in Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu or Guangzhou to a longer Asia trip.
What to check before you fly
- Is your nationality on the current visa-free list, or do you qualify for transit?
- What is the maximum stay, and does your itinerary fit inside it?
- Which ports of entry are eligible for transit?
- Does your passport have enough remaining validity?
- Will your airline accept your documentation at check-in?
