Frequently asked questions

Visas, payments, guides, food, safety and how booking works — the questions international travelers ask us most, answered without the sales pitch.

Booking

How far in advance should I book?

For most itineraries, two to four months ahead is comfortable. Book earlier for: travel during Chinese New Year (usually late January to mid-February), the first week of October, May Day, and July to August school holidays; permits for Tibet and the Mogao Grottoes at Dunhuang; and specific five-star hotels in peak season.

Short-notice travel is often possible — we hold allocations in our own hotels in Jinggangshan and work with long-standing partners elsewhere, so ask even if your dates are close.

Can you customize an itinerary?

That is most of what we do. Send us your dates, the cities you want, your hotel preference, your pace and anything you particularly care about — a specific dish, a craft, a mountain, a family connection — and we will design a route around it.

Our Tailor-Made page has a short form, or you can simply email us. You will get a costed proposal, normally within one business day, and we revise it until it is right.

Do you arrange flights and travel insurance?

We arrange all domestic flights, high-speed rail tickets and transfers inside China, and we can quote international flights through our group's ticketing desk. Travel insurance must be taken out in your own country; we can advise on the cover a China trip needs.

Practicalities

How much walking will there be?

Every itinerary page shows a difficulty rating. Most of our city itineraries are rated Easy, meaning two to four kilometers of walking a day on paved ground. Mountain programs such as Zhangjiajie and the Longji rice terraces involve stairs and can be more demanding.

We can arrange wheelchairs, walking sticks, shorter routes and rest days on request — just tell us about mobility issues when you inquire.

Will my guide speak good English?

Your guide will be a licensed English-speaking guide, selected for your itinerary rather than assigned by rotation. For specialist interests — archaeology, imperial history, tea, photography, birdwatching — tell us and we will match a guide with that background.

We can also arrange French, German, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Korean and Russian-speaking guides in the main cities with reasonable notice.

Can you cater for dietary requirements?

Yes. Vegetarian, vegan, halal, kosher-style, gluten-free and allergy requirements are all manageable, and we brief every restaurant in advance. Chinese regional cooking is more adaptable than most visitors expect, and our guides are used to handling this.

If you have a serious allergy, tell us in your inquiry and we will build a written dining brief and pass it to each guide and hotel along the route.

Is China safe and easy to travel in?

China has one of the lowest street-crime rates of any major travel destination, and public transport, hotels and tourist sites are consistently well run. The practical frictions are usually language and payment rather than safety.

We cover both: your guide handles communication, and we brief you before departure on setting up Alipay or WeChat Pay with an international card so you can pay by QR code anywhere, including street stalls.

Pricing

What is included in the price?

Every itinerary page lists its inclusions and exclusions in full. As a rule, our prices include accommodation with breakfast, private transport, English-speaking guides, entrance fees, and the flights or trains shown in the itinerary. International flights, visa fees, travel insurance, gratuities and personal spending are normally excluded.

Your final quote is fixed in writing before you pay a deposit. There are no hidden surcharges added after arrival.

How do I pay, and is it safe?

We issue a written quotation and a service contract, and take a deposit to confirm your booking with the balance due before arrival. We accept bank transfer and major cards through a licensed payment channel, and we issue a formal invoice from the company.

China Comfort Travel Group Jiangxi has been trading since 1995 and is a licensed inbound tour operator. Our full company details, credit code and licenses are published on our About page.

Tours

Are your tours private?

Yes. Almost every itinerary we publish runs as a private tour: your own English-speaking guide, your own vehicle and driver, and your own dates. You will not be merged into a coach group unless you specifically ask for one.

We also arrange small-group departures and specialist group programs — heritage tours, study tours, corporate incentives and conference groups — through our group division.

Visas

Do I need a visa to visit China?

It depends on your nationality. China has a unilateral visa-free policy for short stays covering a number of countries, and a separate visa-free transit policy for travelers passing through on their way to a third country. Both lists change regularly. Tell us your passport and travel dates and we will confirm what applies to you, and if a visa is needed we can supply the invitation documents your application requires.

Always check the current rules with your nearest Chinese embassy or visa center before you book flights — the summary above is a starting point, not a legal opinion.

What is the visa-free transit policy?

Travelers of many nationalities can transit through China without a visa if they are traveling onward to a third country and hold a confirmed onward ticket. Entry is permitted through designated ports and the permitted stay is longer than most people expect — enough for a genuine multi-city stopover rather than just a night near the airport.

We plan transit itineraries that stay inside the permitted area and duration, and we provide the documentation the airline will ask for at check-in.
